Despite no manual deletions and no trace in the trash or audit logs, the files remain missing, even after attempting Google’s recommended recovery process.
Other users soon shared similar experiences, expressing panic and urgency. One user received a concerning response from Google stating that if the file recovery tool failed, there might not be further options for restoration.
Approximately a week after the initial complaint, a Google community manager acknowledged the issue on Nov 29, 2023 (link), indicating that it affected a limited group of Drive for desktop users. While Google suggested not modifying the app data folder or disconnecting the account, the extent of the problem’s reach is still unclear.
As a precautionary measure, Google advised users with sufficient hard drive space to create a copy of the app data folder. A workaround shared by a Google Community user involves accessing the user data folder, despite Google’s recommendation against it.
Presently, Google has not provided any official statement regarding the potential recovery of the missing files. However, the existence of a user-created solution offers some hope.
